  The Original Pancake House

  When my brothers and I were growing up Saturday was cleaning day and there was no better way to start us off than with dad’s pancakes. It was a memory long forgotten but a recent trip to The Original Pancake House brought it back to life.

  The setting is reminiscent of Grandma’s country kitchen. Yellow and striped wall paper is illuminated by chandeliers and the staff is courteous and hospitable.

  The founders,Les Highet and Erma Hueneke,have created an international dining experience featuring Pancake recipes from all over the world. The Hawaiian Pancakes,  the most exotic menu item, are loaded with pineapple and drenched in a tropical syrup born from a reduction of fruit juices (Sadly, the fruit concoction is kept secret). The lingonberry spread (imported from Sweden) slathered across the Swedish Pancakes is a marraige of sweet and tart flavors. It kind of gives the traditional maple syrup a run for its money.

  Most of the recipes  have been borrowed from various regional cuisines, but don’t think for a second that this duo has overlooked the classics. Upon your request, a stack of Blueberry Pancakes will arrive to your table with powdered sugar and a mound of whipped butter. The pancakes are filled with so many blueberries that some might fall victim to rolling off the plate. This type of quality is essential to home cooking.

  I drove by this venue with intense skepticism and fortunately I now understand the error of my ways.

  Digging through some folders and I found this old Batman commission from a few years back. I have a few issues with the colors and Batman himself but I am fairly happy with the outcome.
